Accepting Gifts Graciously
July 6th, 2008
Since God is the sower and reaper of mankind, mothers must be the fertilizer. Without moms to carry, nurture and feed us, the Earth would be a sadder place. Recently I bought my mother the Spa Haven Spa Gift Basket for Mother’s Day. At first she scolded me for spending so much money on her, but after the initial barrage of “you shouldn’t haves” came the “oh my gosh”‘s. Every week it seems she is thanking me for that gift basket. I try to explain to her that she doesn’t have to thank me, that the gift was my “thank you” to her, but she just doesn’t get it.
Most people find it hard to graciously accept a gift. I am included in those numbers. When someone gives me something, I don’t know how to react. I usually start blushing and say thank you, but I always feel I didn’t express my gratitude fully. After searching far and wide, I’ve found a few gift accepting tips and hints.
In public always smile and say thank you no matter what the gift is. It doesn’t matter if it is a chartreuse pair of short shorts and you just wouldn’t fill them out well, or you would fill them out too well, the only appropriate way to respond is to thank the receiver with a grin. You can always talk to them alone and ask if you can exchange for a different size or color, but never ever ask those things around other people, it is rude.
If the gift has been handmade or personalized, such as a gift basket, be happy no matter what. The giver took special care to make/buy the gift so you should suck it up and love it. Sometimes it is hard to do, but you have to. Don’t be ungrateful.
Gifts of money also need words of thanks and should be followed up with a small statement of what you might use it for. Even if you end up using the money for something else, at least you made the effort to put a use to the cash. Never ever SAY you are gonna pay bills with the money even if it is your plan. The only exception is if you are gonna pay some of your college loans. The giver would be honored to have helped with your college education.
Gift receiving etiquette is simple and easily followed. Just remember to smile, say thanks and never embarrass the gift giver.
